ICON is the longest running science fiction convention in the state of Iowa. It was founded in 1975 by Joe Haldeman's writing class and has been held in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area 21 times so far. It has most often been held in October (on a weekend free of Iowa home football games.) Attendance has been around 425 the last three years.

Bear is a KC costumer, an Admiral in the Klingon Assault Group, and he actually has his own home page!

Rusty Hevelin has been an extremely welcome fixture as ICON's Toastmaster for more years than we care to recall. He has attended every ICON but one and has been in fandom since the early forties.

Hotel:

The Best Western Westfield Inn is full. The closest other place is the Express Way Motel just across Highway 965. Their number is (319)645-2466.

ICON will once again be held at the Best Western Westfield Inn located in Coralville, Iowa at I-80, exit 240, Hwy 965. (This will be our 11th year at this site.) Rooms are $56/night for single or double occupancy. Call (319)354-7770 for reservations. Remember to tell them it is for ICON.

Parties:

We will once again be doing a party row at ICON 22. If you plan to have a party we will need to know before the preregistration deadline. If you do not contact us before that time, we cannot guarantee you will get a room in which you can have a party (depending upon response, party room availability may disappear without notice before the preregistration deadline.) Parties will not be allowed in any outside rooms, and will be severely restricted if in rooms not in the party row.

Table prices do not include required memberships for everyone working at the tables. See above for membership rates. The ICON dealer room is now full, but we do keep a waiting list in case of cancellations.

Art Show:

To be added to the list of artists getting ICON art show information, send your name and address to the address below, or send email to iconart@sflis.org. Art show control sheets and rules will be sent out in June or July.

Gaming/LARP:

ICON 22 will have organized gaming for the first time in years. The gaming will include RPGA events: "Scout's Honor," "Potions, Lotions, Notions," "Closed for Business," and "Descent into the Deep," as well as other gaming yet to be determined. A schedule will appear here when it is determined.

We will be hosting our eighth annual LARP this year. ICON's LARPs were started by Steve Crow, have always been volunteer-written and -run (sometimes by professional gaming designers/writers), have had 20-70 players, and have NEVER cost an additional fee to participants. Past LARPs have been based on "The Prisoner," "The World of Darkness," "Shadowrun," "Over the Edge," etc. Expect news here when the theme/system for this year's LARP have been determined. We will send a mailing to those who mark the LARP check-off on the registration form to allow for pre-con character work.

Child care:

At this time we are planning to have a paid professional on site for much of the weekend to handle child care. The cost to users of this service is tentatively planned to be $1 per hour per child. For those who cannot afford this rate, we should have a plan for exchanging child care hours for volunteer hours helping with child care. If you are considering using child care, please contact us early so we can have an idea of how much this service will be used. We might have to limit availability at the con if we don't get enough input in advance.

I'kon:

ICON 22 is expecting a goodly sized influx of Klingon costumers given the Writer GoH's connections to the development of Klingon culture and language through his writings and the Fan GoH's connection to the Klingon Assault Group. Thus we plan to have Klingon-related programming events geared toward Klingon wannabees as well as those who have already seen the light (or would that be the dark?)
